Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
Classified as a species by Holland in 1896. Classified as a synonym of rougeti Guérin by Aurivillius (1898). Eltringham (1912) follows this view. Le Doux (1928) classifies buxtoni as a form of the subspecies manjaca Boisduval. Pierre & Bernaud (1999), having demonstrated the synonymy of eponina Cramer with serena Fabricius, classify this taxon as a synonym of serena.
