Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
Originally described as closely related to oncaea Hopffer. This taxon was classified as a subspecies of violarum Boisduval by Neave (1910). Eltringham (1912), however, noted that the distinctive characteristics of the genitalia are sufficient to classify asema as a species. Pierre (1988) emphasises that distinguishing it from the form gracilis Wichgraf remains problematic.
