This subspecies is distinguished from the nominate species by the red spot on the hindwing. The taxon was classified as a valid subspecies by Eltringham (1912), but subsequently as a form by Carcasson (1961).
Bernaud & Ducarme (2021) classify alberta as a distinct species.
