Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
Trimen recognized the validity of this species (1887 and 1889), which he previously confused with zetes in 1862 and 1869. Aurivillius (1898, 1906, 1922) and Neave (1910) classified acara as a variety of zetes (subspecies). Eltringham (1912) classifies acara as the East African subspecies of zetes. Holland (1920), based on zetes breeding conducted in the Congo, raises the question of acara’s identity, as some of the resulting forms closely resemble it (for males only). Overlaet (1955) classifies acara as a distinct species, noting that the two species coexist in vast regions and describing the differences in detail. This did not prevent Carcasson (1961), van Son (1963), Carcasson and Ackery (1981), and Larsen (1991) from classifying acara as a subspecies. Today (Pierre, 1985), acara is classified as a distinct species (vicariant of zetes).
