Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
Butler (1896) proposed treating caldarena as synonymous with stenobea Wallengren. This view was strongly criticised by Marshall (1896), who pointed out that the geographical ranges of the two species are quite distinct, the only point of overlap being the Upper Limpopo River. This view was taken up by Aurivillius (1898), who classified caldarena as a species, followed by Neave (1910).
