Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
Doubleday (1848) classified bonasia as a synonym of cynthia Herbst (and cynthius Drury). Guérin (1849) wished to use the name eponina Cramer for this species. Butler (1869) confirms that the type specimen of bonasia is held at the BMNH (Banksian collection), and represents a variety of serena Fabricius (identical to Drury’s cynthius, which he names cyntheus). The illustration of bonasia in Jones’s work (unpublished, slide 153 of the Washington Museum) depicts the taxon currently regarded as bonasia and classified as a species. Bernaud & Pierre (2026) show that this name applies only to West African populations, with those of Central Africa being named praeponina Staudinger, due to their molecular divergence.
